September 16th: Designers, Drinks & Social Change

September 6th, 2010

Designers Drinks & Social Change or DDSC is a group of fun and energetic folks in the design industry that are looking to make a different. Each month we have a topic and share best practices and advise on opportunities happening in the world. We work together to formulate solutions to ultimately create change for the planet.

Join us for this month’s talk:

When: September 16th, 2010 at 6pm EST, 5pm CST, 3pm PST
Where: http://www.tokbox.com/tiltstudioinc/ddsc
Topic: “Design Tithing: Making a living, finding time to make a difference”

  • How do you balance billable hours and/or meeting company deadlines with working on issues that matter to you
  • Is it feasible to simply earn a living doing what you are passionate about? (How much does a living constitute?)
  • Who does this most effectively in the industry that you know of?
  • If you could find a utopian balance, what would it be?

Our guest speaker this month is Kelly Stevens, the Art Director for Whole Foods Market:

Kelly Stevens, a self-proclaimed “tree hugger”, has been the Southwest Regional Art Director at Whole Foods Market for eight and a half years in
Austin, Texas. She firmly believes that “we can all do SOMETHING, even if just making small changes in the way we live and the decisions we make. Good
habits become infectious, changing us, changing others and that is when the opportunities for a healthier planet become limitless.” Kelly uses her
passion for sustainable living and eating as a catalyst for healthy social change at a macro level with her design work at Whole Foods Market.

Kelly received her BFA in Design from the University of Texas at Austin and has worked for the Blanton Museum of Art, T3 Advertising, and developed a
pajama company. She is a centerfold feature in a Neenah Paper piece on sustainable designers (September 2010) entitled “Forces of Nature.”
